Do you like Haunted Houses?

Do you enjoy haunted houses or trails? I'm not opposed to them but I had an experience a few years back that still haunts me...

My friends and I visited a haunted house a few hours away from my hometown. There were a variety of activities and one of them included a haunted bus trail. To be perfectly honest, it was my all-time favorite haunted trail ever! Riders climb aboard a retired school bus that has the roof cut off. For fifteen minutes the driver, dressed in costume, takes the bus through a trail in the woods while staff dressed in a variety of costumes try to scare the p%$# out of you. I'm sure for some that's not an exaggeration. The real fun...the bus is traveling at a high rate of speed (at least in the middle of the woods it felt fast). And at the very end the bus is playing chicken with a semi that is on fire...yes, that's what I said...it was on fire. Just when you think you're going to hit head on, the semi verges and goes beside the bus.  The night we went it was pouring rain. We were soaked which added to the theme.

I diverge a bit...

That isn't the experience that has haunted me.

We didn't think anything as we entered into a haunted house--a rickety old place that reminded me of the animated movie The Monster House. At first it felt geared more for kids, but boy was I wrong. We were laughing and having a great time and then we were led through a door and into a dark room, yet, as we continued on the space became smaller and narrower (which wasn't easy for the men in the group who are over six foot). I'm afraid of small spaces. Always have been, at least since I was four and was locked into a shed by a neighbor bully. That's another story. It became so small that we had to get down on our hands and knees and push through the heavy walls...

Okay. I'd had enough. I wanted out. I told my friend who was behind me to "Get the hell out of my way!" I practically tore through that tiny tunnel and ripped through the door followed by my friends who were equally as scared, and paranoid. Along came a masked staff member who rudely told us there was no way back. Sooooo...we had to venture forward. You can probably guess how much I'm panicking at this point. I'm sweating, and feeling like I'm at a cross between crying and vomiting.

Bravely, with the support of my friends, we all pile back into the room and decide the best thing was to rush as fast as humanely possible. For me, easier because of my size. For the men, not so easy. However, I think we all moved quicker than we ever had before.

We made it out alive. And then the call came...

Then...the scariest aspect...I got a call that my oldest daughter was taken by ambulance to the hospital. She was at a Halloween party walking through a haunted trail with a group of friends when a monster jumped out and scared the girls. They turned and booked it and in the process my daughter was knocked down and trampled on. A foot went into the center of her back, knocking the wind out of her and dislocating her shoulder. Realizing what had happened, the girls went back to help. During the process of trying to pick my daughter up, they knocked her shoulder back into place, but her breathing was still labored and she was in pain.

And that's why an ambulance was called...

For anyone who has been in a similar circumstance understands there's nothing more frightening then receiving a vague call that your daughter can't breathe and is being rushed to the hospital...and being two hours away. We piled into the car and drove as fast as we could. Scared because we had no clue what was going on with my daughter and freezing because we were soaked. Finally, we made it to the hospital, looking like we're wearing costumes ourselves, to find that she was okay.

Do you have a scary story to tell?

Long Excerpt from Cowboy Luke

JADY PIERCE PULLED up to the school where her police officer husband had been working weekend security detail during basketball games to earn some extra money. They planned to take the honeymoon they never had. For one reason or another they couldn’t take a trip when they’d first married over two years ago. They were staying two weeks in Italy, then two weeks in Africa. She’d been so caught up in planning that she’d missed the subtle signs that she hadn’t had a period in six weeks.

Grabbing the doctor’s letter from the console, she read the words for the tenth time… “Your pregnancy test results are POSITIVE.”

She’d went in for her yearly physical, a requirement for firefighter duties, and after routine lab work the results had floored her. They’d forgotten to use a condom during a romantic evening a few months ago and now they were having a baby. She’d always wanted children, but Branch had wanted to wait until they were more financially secure, but sometimes fate had other plans.

Jady felt blessed. She hoped her husband would see this as a blessing too.

Folding the test results, she stuck them in her jacket pocket.

Excitement bubbled up inside her as she climbed out of her Jeep and walked in through the glass door, stepping up to the concession’s booth. The tall brunette behind the counter greeted Jady with a wide smile. “Hi, Jady!”

“Hi, Darcy.”

“I heard you put out a house fire last week. Branch told us all about it. He said you saved an entire family from the blaze. I don’t know how you do it, lady. You work so hard.”

She didn’t like talking about her job. Although she loved her career as a firefighter, she also learned long ago that for mental preservation, she needed to leave work at the office and focus on her personal life on days off. “I work with an amazing unit.”

“I’m sure you do. Come to watch the game, have you?” Darcy stacked bottles of water into the cooler.

Jady wasn’t positive, but she thought she caught a bit of sarcasm or resentment in the other woman’s tone. Admittedly, Jady and these women didn’t have much in common. They were mothers who dedicated themselves to all the games, fundraisers, and other events at the school while Jady devoted her time and energy to her career. Now that would change, but how so? This opened a can of worms. Would she have to quit her job? Would she find herself working concession stands and leading up weekly parent meetings? Would she be submerged into a community where she’d be expected to participate in bake sales? Realizing Darcy was eyeing her in curiosity, Jady answered, “Maybe, but first I need to speak to my husband. Is he in the gym?”

Darcy’s brow creased and she looked over at the woman ladling cheese sauce into a plastic cup. “Lana, have you seen Officer Pierce? I thought he left already.”

“Last time I saw him I think he was heading for the teacher’s lounge, but I’d check inside the gym. We’ve been swamped and this is the first lull so I might have missed him,” the woman answered.

Leaving the stand, she peeked her head through the double doors into the gym and didn’t see him.

Jady couldn’t wait to tell her husband the news about the baby. He would be shocked at first, she had been too, but she believed he would come around and see that they were fortunate.

She roamed through the dim, empty hall of the high school, listening to the muffled chants and cheers as the crowd cheered on the undefeated basketball team that was headed to regionals and most likely state.

Would she and Branch want to send their daughter or son here? Jady wanted her child to attend public school, but would private school be best?

Branch was very athletic, so he’d want their child to play sports. And she’d want him or her to work hard academically to get into a good college.

Would he or she look like Branch, or take after her?

Never in Jady’s wildest dreams would she have believed life would be so kind to her, not after her tumultuous upbringing. People could overcome a lot when they put their minds to it.

Taking out her cell phone from her back pocket, she tried Branch’s number again but still no answer.

Where was he?

Usually he would be standing in the gym making sure overzealous fans behaved themselves. He called it a gravy job because the pay was good, and the worst-case scenario would be a loudmouthed parent getting tossed out for yelling at a referee.

Jady tried the door to the teacher’s lounge but it was locked. The doors were kept secure during games.

She tried his number again. His ring tone, a familiar AC/DC song, sounded from inside the room. Smiling, she was relieved she’d finally found him, and slipped down another hallway to the back entrance to the lounge. She pushed through the closed door and the hairs on her neck lifted. A sickening feeling churned throughout her body. Something didn’t feel right.

NEW COVER! NEW COWBOY!

Hi, all! First, let's talk about weather. I live in Ohio and we're known for Mother Nature not being able to make up her mind 'round here, but I woke up yesterday to three inches of snow, everything covered in white and cold as an ice queen's dreams. Brrr. However, as you can see by the picture below, it was pretty. One silver lining, right?

I've been working on my second book in the The Brothers of Dove Grey Series. I truly love these characters. I hope you'll love them to. Have you read the first book, All Cowboy and Charm? That was one of my favorite books to write. These characters seem to write themselves. If you haven't grabbed it yet, please do. It's in a box set with some amazing, rocking-a$$ authors who love cowboys as much as I do.

So...for this week's five-sentence-friday, I'm giving you an unedited snippet from Book 2, All Cowboy and Rough Rider.

Finally, he shifted in his worn boots and said, “Evenin’, Annika.”
She felt the intensity of his gaze across the three feet of space.
“Hi, Cross.” She returned his narrowed gaze, not allowing the quivering in her spine to seep into her muscles. Although she wasn’t in town to impress anyone, especially a Dawson, she most assuredly didn’t care what Cross or his family thought of her. However, she could have kicked herself for her disarray. Karma played a trick on her. This had to be a stroke of bad luck, payback for some evil she’d done in the world. She looked like a bag lady with her T-shirt that fit her like a potato sack, yoga pants with holes in the knees, and her hair…she couldn’t remember if she’d even brushed it today. She’d climbed out of bed, thrown it into a messy topknot and started working on the house. “What are you doing here?”

Have you seen the cover for All Cowboy and Charm?

#FiveSentenceFriday

 #fivesentencefriday

HI, all! Here's a snippet for my WIP, Cowboy Luke!

Hearing the identifiable clicking of a gun hammer being cocked behind him, Mug stiffened and slowly lifted his hands. “I’m unarmed.”
A tense silence passed.
Finally…
“I’ve met a few brave men in my life, Cowboy, but you’re not one of them,” came the soft, feminine voice. “You must have a death wish.”
He grinned and lowered his arms to his sides. “I’ve always been one to find trouble. Looks like I have again.”

What she wanted was to tell him how much she missed his penis. Before him she would have thought it crazy to miss a man’s appendage. She’d enjoyed having it in her mouth, her body, knowing he was so receptive to her touch. That was a drug, and adrenaline rush, to bring a powerful man to his brink.
Jady understood the carnal need, but could she protect herself against the deeper feeling that had needled its way in the center of her chest. Not only was he sexy as fuck, but he could only be described as smart, strong, funny, and entertaining. Mostly, she could say without a doubt that he wasn’t anything like Branch. Not. One. Iota. He was an asshole. Mug was not. Branch had not only screwed around and betrayed her, he’d thought the world owed him something. Mug had an altruistic attitude and she respected that.

An excerpt from Cowboy Luke (Book 5, Cooper's Hawke Landing Series)

“A kiss? If you win, you want me to kiss you?” Her cheeks flamed and he felt a rise behind his zipper. He could see her nipples harden under the thin shirt and he swore it rigged every need in his body.
“Yeah. A kiss. It can be as short or long as you want it to be.” He wasn’t sure she’d agree to the wager, but man, he looked forward to having her close.
