Jennifer Jakes

Thanx for sitting on the hotseat today, Jennifer !!!

Why do you write western historical, Jennifer? There is just no other genre for me. I’m completely enthralled by the old west and the western frontier. What romance subgenres do you write in?  Just erotic western historical
Is there a certain theme/trademark you use in your books? For some reason no matter how ‘light’ I may want to make a story, it always ends up having a little suspense. I can’t write ‘light’ at all.
What gets your inspirational juices flowing? Not one thing in particular. I may see something or hear something………Sometimes I like silence when I write and sometimes I like music. It just depends on my mood and the day. LOL
How do your stories come to life? Is it real or fantasy? Well, writing historical, I really try to keep it real. My stories are a little gritty – as a western should be in my opinion. It’s like the difference between watching BONANZA or watching a Clint Eastwood movie. I swear they scrubbed Little Joe Cartwright and family before every scene. They were the cleanest people on TV. No dust, no grim, no cow/horse manure. . .*shakes head*. Now think of THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES. I don’t think Clint bathed while filming. LOL That’s keeping it real.
Do you have any book signings or author appearances coming soon? Yes. I’m having a signing March 19 after my chapter meeting in St. Louis at the Barnes and Noble on Watson. Then I will be at Lori Foster’s Reader/Author Get Together in Ohio in June. What is your writing schedule? Ha ha. Well, I always say it’s a binge/purge process. I will make notes and stew and simmer on a story for awhile until I feel like I know my characters …..then I’ll rush in and write it.
Do you have any dirty little secrets you don’t mind sharing with us? We promise we won’t tell a soul.  Hmmmmm. Well, I read Emma Lai’s secret so I guess I’ll confess too. I’d love Alex O’Loughlin. I’d spread him on toast and eat him up!
What do you do in your downtime to relax? Watch movies or the Food Network.
If you could meet one person from the past or present who would it be? Matthew Brady who photographed the Civil War. His photos are moving, so can you imagine the stories he could tell??
Where is your fave place to visit? Arizona – love the Grand Canyon and Sedona and the area around Cave Creek.
Are you a fairy tale or a realist sorta person?  Realist all the way.
Any suggestions for unpublished authors? Study the craft, study the craft and study the craft.
If you had another career, what was it? I’m the Jenn of all trades. I have kind of a
career bucketlist. And I’ve had fun at most of them.
If you didn’t write, what would you do instead? Hmmm. I still want to be a home stager
      – the people who prepare (décor-wise) homes for open house.
If you could have one wish, what would it be?  That my mom would not have cancer.
In one word only, describe yourself. Stubborn
Are you an animal person? Yes. We have dogs, cats and horses.
Please tell us about your most recent release and where we can purchase it. RAFE’S REDEMPTION   THE WILDER ROSE PRESS

He rode into town to buy supplies, not a woman.

For hunted recluse Rafe McBride, the raven-haired beauty on the auction block  is exactly what he doesn't need. A dependent woman will be another clue his vengeful stepbrother can use to find and kill him. But Rafe's conscience won't let him leave another innocent's virginity to the riff-raff bidding. He buys her, promising to return her to St. Louis untouched. He only prays the impending blizzard holds off before her sultry beauty breaks his willpower.

She wanted freedom, not a lover.

Whisked to the auction block by her devious, gambling cousin, and then sold into the arms of a gorgeous stranger, outspoken artist Maggie Monroe isn't about to go meekly. Especially when the rugged mountain man looks like sin and danger rolled into one. But a blizzard and temptation thrust them together, and Maggie yearns to explore her smoldering passion for Rafe.

But when the snow clears, will the danger and secrets that surround Rafe and Maggie tear them apart?

Excerpt:
Maggie wanted freedom, not a lover…

Oh, Lord. He was going to kiss her. She shouldn’t want this. She was confused enough.
Respectable women didn’t kiss men they barely knew, certainly not men who made them have wild,
 exotic dreams.

It was crazy. He was making her want crazy things. Making her not give a damn about her reputation
or her virginity. Or her long-awaited freedom. All she could think about was that dream, and the way
his sinful mouth had felt. The table was only a step away, and honey was just as sweet as peach juice…

She swallowed hard and looked up into his hooded eyes.

“Maggie,” he groaned. “Don’t be scared. I’d never hurt you.”

Her mouth parted to object, but firm lips covered hers, hungry, demanding. She gasped, shocked at his
hunger, but even more at the illicit response coursing through her. An aching heat unfurled low in her
stomach, pulsed between her legs. Oh, yes. It started just like in the dream.

He deepened the kiss, coaxed her lips with his warm tongue. Long, languid strokes teased the inside of
her mouth, encouraging, tempting before he pulled back to nibble the corners of her lips.

Oh, God. Is this what all kisses felt like? Hot, lethargic? Melting her like molasses over warm bread?

 “Kiss me, Maggie,” he breathed.

About the Author

After trying several careers—everything from a beautician to a dump truck driver—Jennifer finally returned to her first love, writing. Maybe it was all those Clint Eastwood movies she watched growing up, but in her opinion there is no better read than a steamy western historical.

Married to her very own hero, she lives on fifteen acres along with two beautiful daughters, two elderly horses, two spoiled cats and two hyper dogs.

During the summer she does Civil War re-enacting and has found it a great research tool, not to mention she has continued appreciation for her microwave and hot water heater.

We are spoiled

We are spoiled.

We meet someone, have a connection, feel love, and everything falls into place. Haha...Life isn't a fairytale.

Why do we fall into the same trap? We believe that love automatically equals forever? That each and every time a storm cloud hovers over our relationship it will come out with a rainbow. Well, we've been told "rainbows only after a storm."

Truth is, love doesn't conquer all. It needs nourishing. It needs pampering. It needs two people who understand its magic.

We have love and we become comfortable. We argue...most of the time over silly issues. We make up, and sweep the aftermath under the rug. We don't take the time to fix the broken. The rug can only hide so many issues before they become the blue elephant in the room. We expect a relationship to thrive...well...just because we love someone.

We tell ourself we want love, a relationship--the whole package. But why aren't we willing to work harder? To lower our pride? To say sorry? To admit our wrong and make it right? Why do we feel the need to hurt the one we love so much? Do we not see that love doesn't come around often? That special feeling in your gut is just that...special.

Unfortunately, when we wake up alone, and that special someone is gone, we feel like our world has crashed down around us. Suddenly their faults are not so bad. We look back wishing we'd done THIS instead of THAT. We wish we'd said sorry more times than we had. We wish we would have said I Love You with every breath. We wish we'd understood.

We're spoiled.

Forward Alone

There comes a point in life when we lose our way. We lose ourself. We reach a fork in the path and we're uncertain which way we should go. The trials of life darken our path and there is no glimmer of light to help in finding our way through the perils. We cast a glance over our shoulder at the places we've been. We can't move backward, to the times when life was good--love was good.

It's scary moving forward alone.

I have played an active role in every minute of my life. If there is someone I should blame, I can only point at myself. How many times have you been told you see what you want to see and not the truth? I've been told that a lot. I can see that truth.

I have become the worst possible version of myself. I look around and it's obvious. Life offers little challenge. I feel as if I'm on the outside peering into someone else's life--someone who calls herself by my name. I've allowed the pain of loss to weaken me. I've allowed my distrust from the past to alter my future--in an ugly way. It's too late to say sorry to those who have been inflicted wrongly. However, their pain is vindicated. They found the weak spot and needled their retaliation deep within me. Do they have blood under their nails?

If ever it were possible to run away, now would be the time. To find myself. To find that person with strength and happiness. When one is stuck in the same bubble they've built, it's hard to see anything beyond the facade. It's amazing how it takes months of hard work to create something beautiful and lovely, but only minutes to destroy it.

We must ask ourself...do we shed tears over the loss or is it because we are alone. Life is risky. Life isn't easy. It promises pain, as well as happiness. With each hurdle we endure, we must take it as a life lesson. With each person we meet, we must value them as a teacher. There is a lesson in everything if we're willing to learn.

A Love Story--Crash and Burn

I've heard that a woman will have suffered four heartaches before she finds the ONE.

My question, what is left of the heart after four heartaches?? I'm imagining a cold, brittle shell of a person. I'm not sure there is much to love after four crash and burns. My stomach turns to think this is possible. A heartache can last a full year, maybe longer, before we recover. Do the calculations. Yikes !

Love is a mystical thing. While we have it, the feeling is breathtaking, magical, boosts one's ego, brings joy and happiness. We treat our partner like they have fallen from heaven. They have no faults. But what happens when we decide, or fate decides, it's over?

This is the scary part. A person who is hurt has the capacity to hurt others--even the innocent. It's like a breeze of insanity sweeps in and numbs the brain cells. A person only knows the pain they are experiencing. How deeply, and what method, he will hurt the target depends on his character and the depth of his pain. Does it take a nasty person to behave nasty? I don't think so. I believe a good man can allow his emotions to cloud his judgment. He wants to feel justified in his behavior. So he twists the facts, proving to himself, and to everyone, "See, I had no choice but to end the relationship." Why this makes it easier for him to move on, who knows, but it does.

Problem? We all have a right to move on the best we can, right? Wrong. When our emotions are at a dangerous level, there is risk for explosion. We don't see, think, act clearly. We lie to ourself, and to others, because we need to feel like there was nothing more we could have done on our part to make the relationship work. History is destined to repeat itself. If you haven't faced the facts of what your issues are, then at least face the fact that you are desitined to repeat the same misgivings.

If you are suffering, take it for what it's worth. Maybe the relationship was worth saving. Loss hurts, of course, but to feel the pain means you care. I've been in relationships where it was over and done was done. I was over it quicker than it took me to say "goodbye." It should always be so easy, right?

Why are we always so quick to let a loved one slip away?

Steph Burkhart

Thank you, Steph. I'm so glad to have you here.

Steph: Rhonda, thanks so much for having me here today. Just a little about me: I was born in Manchester, New Hampshire. After graduating from high school, I joined the US Army. I spent 11 years in the military, 7 in Germany. I left the Army in 1997 and settled in California, but my favorite football team is still the New England Patriots.  I work for LAPD as a 911 dispatcher. I've been married for 19 years. I have two boys, Andrew, 8, and Joseph, 4.

Rhonda: Why do you write romance? What romance subgenres do you write in?

Steph:  What I love about romance is that it inspires hope and leaves the reader with a good feeling. It's upbeat and speaks to the power of love. I enjoy writing paranormal romance – werewolves and witches mainly. Both are essentially human and I like to explore how "the beast" affects the human psyche – ultimately how the paranormal creature struggles to maintain their humanity.

I also write contemporaries with an international flair. That stems from my time in the Army and being stationed in Europe. I loved visiting the different nations in Europe and learning about the different cultures.

I've also have a soft spot in my heart for steampunk, but I enjoy challenging myself by trying different romantic subgenres. I have a sci-fi short story in the Borealis II Anthology with Desert Breeze Publishing.

Rhonda: Is there a certain theme/trademark you use in your books?

Steph: My tagline is "Romance Under the Moonlight," so I always try to work in a romantic moonlight scene in my stories.

Rhonda: What gets your inspirational juices flowing?

Steph: I have to give my muse "Juliet" some credit here or she'll start flicking her nail file against my ear and that's very annoying. LOL!! Believe it or not, I'm a pretty heavy sleeper so I don't get much inspiration from dreams. My inspiration comes from Juliet and from watching a variety of TV shows, movies, and reading.

Rhonda: If you could meet one person from the past, who would it be?

Steph: Gosh, that's a toughie. I have a big list. Ultimately, I'd like to meet Franklin D. Roosevelt. The man was a dynamic president and a leader. He inspired people and guided America through World War II. He's a hero in my book. I'd also like to meet George VI and Winston Churchill because they did the same for the British people.

Rhonda: Where is your favorite place to visit?

Steph: I live in Southern California and I love visiting Catalina Island off the coast – especially during the 4th of July. My family rents a condo there and we really get into the holiday festivities. They have a golf cart parade, the USC marching band (there's something about live music that makes it special) and fireworks over Avalon Bay that are gorgeous to watch.

Rhonda: Any suggestions for unpublished authors?

Steph: Have patience. Learn your craft. Master active voice.

Rhonda: In one word only, describe yourself:

Steph: Multitasker.

Rhonda: Please tell us about your most recent release.

Steph: Sure. The Count's Lair is a paranormal romance which takes place in Budapest Hungary in 1901. Long & Short Reviews gave it 5 Books.

Blurb: Count Anton Varga dares Lady Amelia Andrássy to discover the dark secret he hides from the rest of the world.

Excerpt:

Amelia went inside. The room was cast in obsidian shadows by a single candle burning on her dressing room table. The air was laced with the scent of mulberries. She grew warm. Her heart beat faster. Her defenses cracked.

"Anton?" she whispered.

He stepped out of the darkness behind her, placing his hands on her upper arms, pressing his chest against her back. His lips brushed against her ear, sending a shockwave through her. "You look wonderful tonight, Amelia."

She dared to close her eyes and enjoy his embrace. "Anton."

"Yes, it's me."

Warm feelings of longing stirred within her, only to be quickly doused by the sting of anger at his sudden departure. She stepped out of their embrace and spun to glare at him. "How dare you."

He backed away, confusion pooling in his unusual eyes. "I thought--"

"You thought what?"

"That you'd want to see me."

"It's been two months since I last saw you, and you didn't even try to seek me out. I had no idea if you were dead, alive, or just too busy with your life to think of me."

"I'm sorry." His expression softened. "I had hoped to avoid the cool look in your eyes just now."

Exasperated, she let out a quick breath. "You're infuriating."

"So I've been told."

She crossed her arms and struggled to keep her crumbling battlements up. He had a lot to explain. The candlelight cast dark, almost satyr-like shadows over his chiseled face. If his explanation made sense, she'd will her heart to believe him. "So, Anton, how do you explain your absence? I thought I'd found a friend."

He paused and drew in a deep breath. His eyes grew translucent. "I am sorry. I had a lot to think about. I thought you would understand. I wanted to give you time to mourn your husband properly."

"I see."

"I also wanted to clear my head."

Cheryl Pierson

Thnx Cheryl for joining us today. I'm so glad to have you in the hotseat.
Cheryl, why do you write romance? What romance subgenres do you write in?
Hi Rhonda, and thanks for having me today!  I write short stories and novels—all romance, but some are historical westerns and some are contemporary.

Do you notice any certain themes/trademarks you use in your books?

Hmmm. Well, some would probably say I always have a wounded hero. LOL Probably 9 out of 10 of my stories DO actually have a hero who gets wounded or has been wounded previously and is recovering from it during the story.  I don’t know why that is, but I’ve been teased about “Cheryl’s wounded heroes.” And I always say, being a hero in a Cheryl Pierson story is like wearing a red shirt in a STAR TREK landing party.  You may not be completely expendable, but you ARE going to be hurt somehow before it’s all over. LOL

We alll have something that gets our inspirational motives flowing, what are yours?

I wouldn’t say there’s ever one particular thing.  Usually my stories are just created from one particular scene that might come to me and it might be something in the middle of the story or near the end, not necessarily in the beginning.  I write the story around that scene.

How do your stories come to life? Is it real or fantasy?

Because I write pretty gritty, realistic stories in any of the sub-genres I take on, my tales are usually a combination.  Life in the old west was tough.  So although I’m using a whole lot of imagination, and some fantasy (as in my book TIME PLAINS DRIFTER), a lot of what I write is based on realism.

Do you have any dirty little secrets you don’t mind sharing with us? We
promise we won’t tell a soul.

No, I really don’t have any dirty little secrets—wish I did.  LOL  My life is pretty boring, pretty routine.  My husband just retired last month and I’m getting used to having him here with me during the days.

I know this may be a silly question to ask a writer, what do you do in your downtime to relax?

I don’t have a whole lot of downtime.  I used to love to scrapbook, but haven’t done that now in probably over a year. Life is hectic! LOL I love to read and sometimes I will watch tv in the evenings when I’m just a vegetable.

If you could meet one person from the past or present who would it be?

Oh, gosh.  That is a very interesting question.  There have been so many great people during the history of time, I’m not sure which one I’d pick! I would say I would pick one of my ancestors, but that might prove very disappointing, and maybe not at all what I would have expected. LOL So I would probably have to say I would love to have met Abraham Lincoln. I’ve always really admired him and what he had to go through not only as president during some very difficult times, but also in his personal life.

      Any promotional secrets?

Rhonda, I’m probably the world’s worst at promotion.  I’m not really good at it because I would rather be writing, and I also am a terrible technophobe. Learning different applications and procedures and such is just painful for me.

I'm bad at promo, too. I just wanna write. Where is your fave place to visit?

I love the beach—any and all beaches.  But I also love any place that is historical.  So I guess there is really no “favorite” for me—as long as it’s got some interesting history, I’m there.  Living here in Oklahoma, one of my favorite places to go visit is Fort Sill Army Base near Lawton. Geronimo is buried there, and so is Quanah Parker and many other Indian chiefs.  Every time I go there I really get a deep feeling of peace and I love to just walk through the cemeteries and read the gravestones.  It really fires my imagination.

The beach is always motivational for me. Are you a fairy tale or a realist sorta person?

Both.  My husband calls me “Pollyanna”—he says HE is the realist in our family. LOL I write with a lot of realism both in my dialogue and plot. My stories always have an HEA, but my characters sometimes have a rough time getting to it.  I’ve never written a story where the H/h initially hated one another then overcame it and became head over heels in love.  I have read some books like that that I absolutely LOVED, but I’ve just never written one that had that in the premise. My H/h usually are facing a common enemy somehow, whether it’s society or a gang of outlaws/criminals, or their own self doubts.

      Any suggestions for unpublished authors?

Don’t give up, and don’t stop learning.  Keep on writing and submitting, even though rejection is tough to take.  There are so many people in the world that there is room out there for a lot of different kinds of books/stories, and it may take a while to find your ‘niche’ and a good place to be.  Don’t expect to become a millionaire, either.  If it happens, that is wonderful, but if you are writing for the sole purpose of making money and you don’t love what you’re doing, it will never work for you. Love what you are writing, and keep at it.

If you had another career, what was it? If you didn’t write, what would you do
      instead?

WOW.  I wish I knew! LOL Probably a teacher of some kind, though not in the public school system as it is today.  I’d never make it there with all the politics that go on. I have always loved teaching, and did a lot of tutoring here in one of the local school systems for their Indian Education Dept. LOVED IT.

If you could have one wish, what would it be?

That every child would have a safe and happy home and never go to bed hungry or afraid.

In one word only, describe yourself.

Are you an animal person? If so, which animal?

YES.  I love animals!  I always had cats growing up because my parents wouldn’t let me have a dog. But now that I’m an adult, I find I’m probably more of a dog person, though I still love cats.  My daughter has a huge dog, half Anatolian Shepherd, half Great Pyrenees (hope I’m spelling these right) that I call my “granddog.”

What is your most embarrassing moment?

Probably I’d have to say that would be when I gave a talk at a local library to a literary club and realized afterward that my pants had been unzipped for probably the entire hour I’d been up there talking.

My most recent novel is SWEET DANGER with The Wild Rose Press.  My most recent short stories are with Victory Tales Press and the most recent one of those was in A VALENTINE ANTHOLOGY.  The title of the story is, A HEART FOR A HEART.

Why Settle for a Slice when you can have the Whole Pie?

I met someone yesterday, and how the conversation sidetracked from business to romance I'm not too sure, but indeed it was an interesting conversation. If I tell someone I write romance, erotic romance, I see the question marks light up in their eyes.

For the sake of this story, we'll call her Agnus. Agnus was a heterosexual turned lesbian. Agnus and her partner have been together for five years and seem very happy. I enjoyed talking with her and found her story wonderful.

We were discussing her long-term relationship with her partner and my somewhat-new single life as a divorcee with kids. Yikes, that was a mouthful. She asked me if the "market" had changed any. Hahaha...My answer, "The variety is lacking if not nonexistent." Not that I'm searching. I'm happy, but just saying....And of course our "flavors" in a partner run on different sides of the fence.

Agnus said, "On my first date with my partner(Eunice) she asked me, 'How is it possible that you're available?'" Agnus continued, "I was a bit put off. I took it the wrong way, as if Eunice was saying that there must be something wrong with me." After Agnus had a chance to think about it, she answered Eunice, "I'm available because I refuse to settle."

This is a very simple suggestion, "Don't EVER settle." But even though we tell ourself this, how many times do we settle?

At the grocery, we are standing in front of the meat counter, perusing the thick, fresh filet mignon steaks and our mouth salivates. However, you instead choose the brown-edged, price-reduced cubed steak because you save five bucks. Sure, one doesn't have to always choose the filet mignon, but your mouth, and stomach, would have appreciated the splurge. Shopping for a new outfit, you see a fabulous, stylish sweater that is the perfect shade and fit. You look at the price tag and you almost pee yourself. Is it legal for a store to charge that amount? Your stylish-girl-heart breaks as you pass it by and head to the clearance rack where you pick three shirts that get holes in them after two washings. Sure, the elegant sweater was pricey and almost made you wet yourself in shock, but more than likely it would have lasted much longer and had still been stylish long after the clearance items you bought were discarded as rags.

Now, I'm not saying these things compare to a relationship. There is no comparison, uhh, right? And really, how in the world do we know if we're settling? The first few months of anything feel splendid. We're all mushy inside and everything has that new feeling.

Is there something we need to watch for? Brown-edges? Reduced prices? Fit? Shape? Hmm...

Lia Slater

I am so happy to have Lia here with us today. Thanx, Lia !!!
Lia Slater thinks the world would be a better place if everyone read romance novels. There’s so much to learn from the storylines. Love. Loyalty. Confidence. Passion. Desire. Conflicts would be resolved with happy endings. And, of course, the sex would be mind-boggling.
Lia is well on her way to helping the world become a better place by writing steamy romance with heart-throbbing emotion.
Ok, Lia, let me start by asking the basic question, why do you write erotic romance? Like my bio states—to help the world become a better place. No, seriously, I write erotic romance because it allows me to write sexy stories outside the box. What romance subgenres do you write in? I write paranormal, suspense, and contemporary erotic romance.

The sexy, steamy parts are pretty awesome to write :) Is there a certain theme/trademark you use in your books?
Survival seems to be a common theme in my books. That and I noticed my characters tend to be held captive quite a bit. In Fatal Exposure, my heroine is held against her will by the hero in a secluded mountain cabin. In my story, Off Limits, my heroine is handcuffed to a chair. In WereSlave, my alpha hero is held as a sex slave by the heroine until he turns the tables on her. And in Were Blood, my werewolf heroine falls hard for her yummy captor despite her hatred of his kind (vampire). So…if you enjoy a sexy captive story, these might, er, captivate you.

I love sexy, captive stories. I can't wait to get my hands on WereSlave. What gets your inspirational juices flowing?
Nothing gets my juices flowing more than sitting down and writing that book. Writing every day helps me stay in the zone.

For me, writing is a fix. How do your stories come to life? Is it real or fantasy?
All complete fantasy. My imagination is a wicked thing.

Wicked minds are the best. Are you a fairy tale or a realist sorta person?
I think I have to be both in order to write stories and then sell them.

Please tell us about your most recent release and where we can purchase it. Please give us your urls and your publisher’s url.
Were Blood (the third book in the Were Legends series) is my latest release. It’s available from Ellora’s Cave (http://www.jasminejade.com/p-8752-were-blood.aspx), Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Were-Blood-ebook/dp/B0048EJUIM/), Barnes & Noble (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Were-Blood/Lia-Slater/e/9781419929847/), and multitude of other online stores.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with your readers?
For more info on my books, please visit my website www.LiaSlater.com or take a peek at my blog www.LiaSlater.blogspot.com. I also have a newsletter that you can sign up to join at either of these two places.

Thanks for having me on, Rhonda! It was my pleasure, Lia.
